Chapter 4
Christy usually slept late on the days she worked at the Snowed In Pub. Although her shift was only from six to midnight, long days wore her out. Therefore, she wasnât very happy to have her bladder proclaim six-thirty AM to be her wake-up time. Once she was awake, however, there was no going back. She made coffee and pancake batter and texted Rob to come for breakfast if he was awake.
He was there in fifteen minutes, bringing donuts from the Tea Pot.
âYou said she was âhappy enoughâ in Florida,â Christy began without preamble. âExactly what does that mean?â
He sighed. âIt means sheâs probably not very happy at all. Momâs adaptableâyou know thatâbut losing Dad changed everything.â
Thatâs what happens when you no longer have the person you intended to spend your life with. Christy stopped herself from saying the words, but just barely.
âYou have to ask her what she wants to do. Not sort of or not reallyâask her.â
They worked together in the kitchen the way they always had. While he was traditional in many ways, Rob had never expected to be waited on. When they were seated, their coffee poured and their plates filled, he said, âI called her before I came over here. I would have told you that to start with if youâd given me a chance.â He grinned across the table. âYou should have been thereâyouâd have loved it. It was Lizzy at full throttle.â
âI can imagine.â Austen seldom held back. Christy didnât think she would now, either.
âShe said what she wanted to do was live to be a hundred and die skating in a roller derby and winning. Since thatâs probably not happening, she wants to move back with family, exactly like you said. Only not exactly.â
He stopped talking to take a bite of something. Christy waited patiently for two bites, then said, âClarify.â
âLike you thought, sheâd like to come here, but she wants to live on her own. Apparently youâve talked to her about Over the River and she thinks it sounds like a good venue for bingo and possibly taking the striptease show on the road.â He frowned. âYou might have mentioned that.â
âIâve talked to your mother almost every week since we got married. Iâve never told you what we talked about. Why would I start now?â Heâd never been interested. The fact that his wife and mother got along was enough for him.
He ignored her. âDo you think she could get an apartment out there?â
âIf not now, she can soon. If sheâs anxious to come here, she can stay with me until thereâs an opening. Sadly enough, thereâs a lot of turnover in senior living communities.â Christy paused to eat a donut. âThose are so good,â she said with a sigh. âIâll have to have another one so my hips will match.â
âI wouldnât touch that line for any amount of money.â
âGood thinking.â
âIâll talk to her again. She insists she can fly alone, so Iâm not going to argue that point with her.
