Chapter 4

Christy usually slept late on the days she worked at the Snowed In Pub. Although her shift was only from six to midnight, long days wore her out. Therefore, she wasn’t very happy to have her bladder proclaim six-thirty AM to be her wake-up time. Once she was awake, however, there was no going back. She made coffee and pancake batter and texted Rob to come for breakfast if he was awake.

He was there in fifteen minutes, bringing donuts from the Tea Pot.

“You said she was ‘happy enough’ in Florida,” Christy began without preamble. “Exactly what does that mean?”

He sighed. “It means she’s probably not very happy at all. Mom’s adaptable—you know that—but losing Dad changed everything.”

That’s what happens when you no longer have the person you intended to spend your life with. Christy stopped herself from saying the words, but just barely.

“You have to ask her what she wants to do. Not sort of or not really—ask her.”

They worked together in the kitchen the way they always had. While he was traditional in many ways, Rob had never expected to be waited on. When they were seated, their coffee poured and their plates filled, he said, “I called her before I came over here. I would have told you that to start with if you’d given me a chance.” He grinned across the table. “You should have been there—you’d have loved it. It was Lizzy at full throttle.”

“I can imagine.” Austen seldom held back. Christy didn’t think she would now, either.

“She said what she wanted to do was live to be a hundred and die skating in a roller derby and winning. Since that’s probably not happening, she wants to move back with family, exactly like you said. Only not exactly.”

He stopped talking to take a bite of something. Christy waited patiently for two bites, then said, “Clarify.”

“Like you thought, she’d like to come here, but she wants to live on her own. Apparently you’ve talked to her about Over the River and she thinks it sounds like a good venue for bingo and possibly taking the striptease show on the road.” He frowned. “You might have mentioned that.”

“I’ve talked to your mother almost every week since we got married. I’ve never told you what we talked about. Why would I start now?” He’d never been interested. The fact that his wife and mother got along was enough for him.

He ignored her. “Do you think she could get an apartment out there?”

“If not now, she can soon. If she’s anxious to come here, she can stay with me until there’s an opening. Sadly enough, there’s a lot of turnover in senior living communities.” Christy paused to eat a donut. “Those are so good,” she said with a sigh. “I’ll have to have another one so my hips will match.”

“I wouldn’t touch that line for any amount of money.”

“Good thinking.”

“I’ll talk to her again. She insists she can fly alone, so I’m not going to argue that point with her.
